An Overview of Nations

The nations that currently exist are clustered on the continent’s eastern side; far to the west, past the mountains that serve as the westernmost boundary of rebuilt civilization is a large open expanse, laid waste by deadly spellcraft of the Orh-Kish and ancient Ennu Empires. To the east, the Ocean extends outward, pocketed by numerous islands. Exploration and colonization of these lands has yielded an influx of resources and previously lost artifacts from the sunken Wyntiri Empire.

Still, between these divides, life thrives. To the north, the nation of Regimantis serves as a bulwark of law and protection. To safeguard against the mistakes of the past, arcane magic is outlawed within its borders. Most life in Regimantis is rural, religious, and conservative. Regimantian knights and paladins patrol its borders and roads, keeping peace, security and the Way of Sheysun.

In counterpoint, on the edge of the western frontier, the nation of Callen Moor welcomes magecraft. No other nation is so thoroughly intertwined in the nature of the arcane; from a parliament of wizards that support the throne to the prestigious Academy of Mystics (the heart of spell-knowledge across all the lands), Callen Moor seeks greatness through access to mysteries.

The southeastern coast and its large jutting peninsula belong to the Maugholdings, a collection independently held territories that are governed by the powerful Cahedra, ranked and established “Houses” of learning. Unlike most of the other nations which include smatterings of many racial stocks, the Maugholdings are primarily inhabited by the Maugtheni, a short but burly dwarf-esque racial stock. Other races are welcomed, but the Maugtheni’s incessant drive for knowledge and context are often quite a deterrent. That said, for the curious or the scholarly, there is no place better than the Maugholdings. The Maughtheni are master boat builders, and their armada is the pearl of the seas.

Further south along the coastline is the dark nation of Bramm. The state religion in Bramm is the worship of Ashblack, the Lord of the Endfeast. Darkfangs and necromancers operate openly here, and in fact are given considerable respect. Ironically however, the nation is neither reclusive or unwelcoming – in fact, the cities of Bramm are considered some of the most liberal and hospitable ports of call, and host a variety of businesses and guilds. Over the past decade, the Brammish have poured considerable resources into building their fleet, which is beginning to rival the Maugtheni Armada.

South along the swampy coast between Callen Moor and Bramm are the lands of New Wyntiri. This inhospitable area is inhabited by the remnants of the sunken Wyntiri Empire, who claim that their ancestors washed up upon these shores after the Turning. The scions of that stock have not left since. Most other inhabitants of Narenfel leave these denizens well enough alone, because they have many strange customs and traditions. Chief among these is a society entirely dominated by women (known as Wyntiresses). Men are given subservient and menial roles in Wyntiri society, with little opportunity for upward advancement.

Thell is an icy place north of Regimantis, across the Frost Rush. More of a collection of city-states than a nation, Thellans value independence and self-reliance. They rarely interact with other nations, mostly owing to their geography. There are established trade routes with Regimantis, primarily for the Healing Moly, which grows in the frigid climes of Thell and is instrumental in healing potions, and Foamchargers, large, heavy steeds favored by knights and warriors everywhere.
