The Grundlands

Geographic region

The Grundlands is not a nation per se, but a wilderness area to the west of Callen Moor and New Wyntiri, stretching to the shadows of the ruins of Or-Kish. Many Barbarians make their home in this region, by and large staying away from civilized areas, but occasionally frequenting outposts to do some trading. It is rumored (usually by those who believe the Barbarians of this area are the long-lost descendants of the Ennu Empire) that there still exist a scattering of fabled Ennu blades, now acting sentinel on long forgotten barrows and the like.

Vis (Vissink)

Lake and geographic region

The Vissink is located in the Vis, a large inland lake set within the swamps that border Bramm and New Wyntiri. The Vissink itself is a large sinkhole, vast enough that the waters around it in the lake cascade down into its depths, rather than filling it outright. (The Vis is pocketed with numerous powerful underground natural springs that constantly supply an influx of water to keep this cascading more or less perpetual).

The Vissink is not visible from any shore, though the roar of thousands of gallons cascading into its depths can be heard. The current approaching the Vissink is strong, and unless a person is prepared, he or she will simply be swept over the edge, into the watery abyss.

For those that are able to control their passage and descent, the Vissink is a shaft catacombed with hundreds of caves and passageways, many of which lead down into underground caverns and shafts. These catacombs are mostly obscured by the water than cascade downward from the Vis. Only through incredible luck or specific foreknowledge would a person find an entrance, and even then know where it went or what to expect once there.

Despite the watery curtain, the depths of the Vis are dry enough to explore and walk through, though portions may be submerged or be filled according to some earthen tide timetable. It is in these conditions that the Visric live, in low light or darkness, forging out their existence from the other dark creatures who also make the Vis their home, including a number of fungal and gelatinous creatures, as well as other sentient races that are virtually unknown to surface dwellers.
